Peabody, MA Real Estate And Community Resources Guide

Peabody offers the natural and historic beauty of Boston’s North Shore alongside the modern conveniences of urban living. The city, which was originally settled in 1626, was once a booming center of the leather industry and is still a thriving center of local commerce. Although the city is now known for its many busy shopping centers, business developments have not crowed out the local culture. Peabody has preserved its historical roots through its architecture and museums, and the city maintains flourishing residential areas, beautiful landscapes and an active social community.

The convenience, community and charm that Peabody’s 52,000 residents enjoy have made it a prime location to buy real estate. The city offers something for nearly every homebuyer. Peabody’s well-rounded real estate offering includes choices such as new construction homes, historic colonials, garrisons, tri-levels, condominiums, and townhouses. From luxury-style living to small, simple homes, Peabody has a lot to offer homebuyers. In addition Peabody has a wide range of price categories. In 2010 Peabody’s single-family home sale prices ranged from a low of $85,000 to a high of $685,000, and its mean and median home sale prices were $309,949 and $295,000 respectively. These prices make Peabody an affordable and desirable choice for many homebuyers.

Peabody’s location adds to its desirability. Residents enjoy a central North Shore location that offers direct access to routes I-95, I-93, 128, 114, and 1. This allows residents a thirty minute commute to Boston and Logan Airport, a fifty minute drive to New Hampshire and easy access to points all over the North Shore and west of Boston. In addition MBTA bus service is available to bring residents to Boston, neighboring towns and local shopping centers. Peabody residents are also just a ten minute drive from commuter rail stations in neighboring towns.

Since Peabody is a city, it offers lots of convenient public services. As in most cities residents enjoy full-time police and fire forces as well as a full-service public works department that maintains city infrastructure and provides for curbside trash and recycling pickup. The city also has its own Peabody Municipal Light Plant, a non-profit, consumer-owned, electric utility plant. This city light plant assures residents receive reliable, high quality service, and it often boasts the lowest electric rates in the region. In addition to these services, Peabody’s recreation department has forestry and parks divisions that maintain the city’s green spaces from pruning and planting trees to landscaping medians.

Peabody also maintains great public schools that have ranked competitively in both academics and athletics. The Peabody Public School System, which consists of eight elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, has performed consistently well on state MSAC tests. In athletics Peabody High School’s Tanners are competitive statewide and regionally. Various Tanners teams have won championships, and the Tanners athletic department has won the Boston Globe’s Dalton Award several times in recent years for achieving the highest overall winning percentages in the state. In addition to the public school system, there are three private schools in Peabody: the K-6 St. John’s School, the K-12 Covenant Christian Academy and Bishop Fenwick High School.

In addition to great schools, Peabody offers plenty of recreational facilities and community activities for all ages. Aside from its parks and playgrounds, those who like the outdoors can enjoy two Peabody golf courses: the municipal, 18-hole Meadow at Peabody Golf Course and the private, 18-hole Salem Country Club course, which consistently ranks in Golf Digest’s “Top 100 Golf Courses”. For indoor activities, aside from countless local shops and restaurants, residents can enjoy Peabody’s municipal, indoor ice skating rink. The rink offers lessons, ice sports and recreational skating for all ages. In addition to these facilities, Peabody’s recreation department offers a wide range of outdoor and educational programs from city sports leagues to hobby classes. The city also has an excellent senior center. The center provides senior residents with transportation, social services, health clinics, day and overnight trips, as well as loads of activities from woodworking courses to dance events.

Peabody has several specific local attractions in addition to its many community activities and events. One of Peabody’s most popular attractions, aside from the North Shore Mall, is Brooksby Farm. The farm offers visitors the chance to pick their own fruit all summer long and provides access to fresh native vegetables. In addition the farm has a bakery and maintains a stock of farm animals for public visitors. Peabody is also home to two museums: the Peabody Leatherworkers Museum and the George Peabody House. The Leatherworkers Museum educates visitors about the history of the North Shore’s leather industry with a special focus on Peabody’s roll. The George Peabody House Museum is dedicated to informing people about the life and legacy of Peabody native and philanthropist George Peabody for whom the city was named in 1868.

Homebuyers who are looking for a well-developed community that offers a variety of local activities and attractions as well as a wide selection of housing options and prices should consider what Peabody has to offer. Its prime location, extensive amenities and reasonable prices are an excellent combination for both first-time and seasoned homebuyers.
